The Lifestyle Envy Social Season Diary

Style, tradition and personal moments from the British social season.

The British social season is one of the most elegant and anticipated times of the year, bringing together a calendar of iconic events that celebrate sport, style and tradition. From the excitement of the racecourse to the charm of riverside regattas and the beauty of world-famous flower shows, each event has its own unique atmosphere and sense of occasion.

The Lifestyle Envy Social Season Diary is a guide to some of the highlights of the season, from Cheltenham and Royal Ascot to Henley, Wimbledon and Goodwood. Alongside key dates and event information, I’ll be sharing style inspiration, etiquette tips and personal reflections from the events I attend throughout the year.

For me, many of these occasions hold special memories — whether it’s the Derby at Epsom, just moments from where I grew up, or our annual pilgrimage to Goodwood Revival, a weekend that has become something of a ritual for Mr Envy and me over the years.

Think of this page as both a guide to the season and a personal diary of the moments that make it so special.

Social Season Style Guide

The British social season is as much about style as it is about the events themselves. From elegant race day dresses to relaxed riverside tailoring, each occasion has its own dress codes and traditions.

A few general tips:

  • Always check the dress code for your enclosure or hospitality area

  • Hats are essential for many race day events

  • Comfortable footwear is important for garden and riverside events.

  • Arriving early allows time to enjoy the atmosphere before the main event.

Throughout the season I'll be sharing outfit ideas, favourite brands and style inspiration for each event.

June

Epsom Derby Festival

📍 Epsom Downs
📅 5–6 June 2026

One of the oldest and most prestigious horse races in the world. The Epsom Derby has always been particularly special to me as I actually grew up in Epsom, more specifically Tattenham Corner, right beside the racecourse.

Horse racing was a huge part of family life growing up. Derby Day was always a major event in our household, with the whole family involved in the excitement of the races. My family are passionate racing fans, and my uncle is even a bookmaker, so conversations about form, favourites and odds were very much part of the atmosphere.

Some of my favourite childhood memories are connected to the Derby – the buzz around town, the crowds gathering on the Downs, and the sense that something truly historic was happening just moments from home. For me, the Derby isn’t just one of the highlights of the social season, it’s also a reminder of where it all began.

What to Wear

Derby Day combines classic race day elegance with a slightly more relaxed atmosphere than some other racing events. Smart dresses, tailored pieces and statement hats are always popular choices, while comfortable footwear is essential for navigating the downs.

  • Smart race day attire

  • Tailored dresses

  • Elegant hats or fascinators

Etiquette

The Derby is often considered one of the highlights of the British racing calendar and has been run at Epsom since 1780. It has a long and proud history and while the atmosphere is lively and celebratory, there are still a few traditions worth observing.

  • Dress smartly - while the dress code is less strict than Royal Ascot, race day style is still expected.

  • Check enclosure rules - hospitality areas may have specific dress guidelines.

  • Arrive early - Derby Day attracts large crowds and the atmosphere builds throughout the afternoon.

  • Respect the traditions - the Derby us one of the most historic races in the world and part of the enjoyment is embracing the occasion.

  • Choose practical footwear - much of the day is spent outdoors on grass and on the downs.

Lifestyle Envy Diary Note

Goodwood Revival is without question my favourite weekend of the year. Mr Envy and I have been going together for the past eleven years and it has very much become a tradition for us.

Whenever possible we make a full weekend of it. There is something quite magical about the atmosphere — the vintage fashion, the incredible classic cars and the unmistakable smell of petrol in the air as the racing gets underway.

Goodwood Revival is actually where Mr Envy’s passion for historic motorsport really began. What started as a hobby has grown over the years and he now races in both the Equipe and HRDC series, although racing at the Revival itself would of course be the ultimate dream.

If you are planning to attend, my one piece of advice would be to treat yourself to tickets for the Mess Tent if you can. It’s far nicer to be well fed and watered with trackside views than wandering around trying to find somewhere to sit!

For us, Revival is always one of the highlights of the entire social season.
